Blue Crab Pendant
Carved from the Sea
The crab is a beautiful but grave creature – its grim demeanor not at all suppressed by the glamour of its exterior. I intended to depict this dichotomy in the piece. The goal was to create something strikingly lifelike.
The intricacy of the crab’s structure meant that, to achieve a realistic result, considerable time would be spent on the small details and contours. It needed to be presentable from every angle while maintaining proper dimensions. There is an interconnectivity to the piece that bares the level of intention put into it. Each component is finely tuned to the others around it; every aspect set into an orchestrated similitude of life.
The colored stones used are intended to emulate the coloration of the female blue crab. The shell was carved out of Guatemalan jadeite, with blue sapphires and spessartite garnets in the claws, and cabochon red spinels for the eyes. The bail holds a rubellite tourmaline.
